Federal Public Charge Rule Facts

The Corvallis School District works to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students and we believe that students are better prepared for learning the skills needed to be successful for their future when we remove barriers.

This message is to notify all families of a new federal rule that changes how people are found to be a “Public Charge”. It allows the federal immigration agency to look at a longer list of public benefits, and more factors such as family income, when deciding whether a person is likely to become a Public Charge in the future. This new rule will go into effect on October 15, 2019. Benefits that many of our families utilize and WILL NOT be counted in a public charge test include the following:

  • School meals
  • Special Education
  • School-based Health Services
  • Food from the Food Bank
  • WIC (nutrition assistance for women, infants, and children to age 5)
  • Oregon’s Cover All Kids Program

Please contact your school’s Principal, Family Liaison, Health Navigator if you have questions.
